Project Summary
MHS Massana Hospital is situated approximately 10km from Bahari Beach and Tegeta. It is a
privately run hospital with patients paying approximately 10,000 Tsh (UDS 5) for a consultation,
tests, diagnosis and treatment on an outpatient basis. The hospital handles over 300 patients
per day, with the main areas of treatment being for Malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, Diabetes,
Hypertension, Burns. There is also the Maternal and Child Health Clinic (MCH) located at the
hospital.
Activities
Depending on your level of knowledge and professional qualifications, your duties will include;
taking patient history, checking vital signs, assisting in the laboratory, observation of surgery,
assisting in the MCH with deliveries, theatre and the treatment of children and infants.
At the beginning of each day cases will be presented and you will be expected to advise on which
treatment or course of action would be taken in your country for each case. It will then be
explained what course of action can/will be taken in each case due to the limited resources at the
hospital.
Massana is also a teaching hospital so should you wish to do so you can attend lectures in
subjects that are of interest to you and even prepare a lecture yourself to give to the staff and
students in the hospital.
Schedule
You will be expected to work Monday to Friday from 8am – 2pm, you are more than welcome to
work later if you wish and also at the weekend. Your commitment is essential for the
development of the hospital.
Resources
You will need to arrange your own insurance to be able to practice medically. You may also want
to bring your own equipment such as a stethoscope although this is not essential.

This will help raise the awareness and knowledge of the local staff in the hospital of the medical
sector in developed countries.
Through this mutual cooperation, the hospital will be able to develop it's knowledge in treatment
and counseling methods and you will be able to develop your awareness of the problems and
limitations facing the medical sector in Africa and raise awareness of this when you return to your
country.

WAMATO Trust Clinic 15-8-2007
Project Summary
WAMATO Trust Clinic is situated in Mbezi, approximately
10km from Bahari Beach and Tegeta. It is possible to
reach the project easily using public transport and
walking, the total journey will take around 1 hour. The clinic was started in 1997 after a charity
donated the sea container that houses the clinic. The clinic is partially sponsored by CCFC, they
pay for the 1 nurse and basic medicines, the rest of the clinic is run on donations. The main
areas of treatment that the clinic deals with are Malaria, Worms, Chicken Pox (and other skin
complaints), Mumps, STD’s, Contraceptives and family planning advice, HIV treatment and advice
(patients need to go to the hospital for the actual test), Diarrhea, HIV related chest infections
and pneumonia, baby weighing and pre natal check ups. The clinic has anything from 5 to 15
patients in a day. Advice at the clinic is free but patients are asked to pay a donation of 500 tsh
for medicines.
Activities
As there is no doctor based at the clinic, he comes only
when it is absolutely necessary, depending on your level of
knowledge and professional qualifications, your duties will
include; examining patients, diagnosing and advising on the
necessary course of treatment, administering injections,
writing charts and files and baby weighing.
Once a month there is a counseling/awareness session for
HIV victims called Chuma (Iron in Kiswahili) which you can
attend. Jonathan the social worker in charge of the project
will translate.
It is also possible to do home visits in the lower income areas around Dar es Salaam to provide
counseling to the terminally ill.
Schedule
The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 2 pm. The ‘Chuma’ group meets once a month
on a Saturday. Home visits need to be arranged in cooperation with Jonathan.
Resources
You will need to arrange your own insurance to be able to practice medically. You may also want
to bring your own equipment such as a stethoscope although this is not essential. The clinic
would like to be able to provide Malaria testing and HIV testing to patients but needs support
from pharmaceutical companies to be able to do this.

Tegeta Mission Hospital 30-11-2007
Project Summary
Tegeta Mission is situated in Tegeta, a 20 minute walk from the Tegeta volunteer house and a 40
minute walk from the Bahari volunteer house. The mission was established in 1978 by the
church with the aim of providing affordable health care to the poor, the mission is still managed
and run by nuns. The mission deals with between 250 and 300 patients a day on an out patient
only basis with the patients receiving free consultation and only paying a nominal fee for their
medication. The main areas of treatment are for malaria, skin diseases, TB, typhoid, worms and
anemia.
Once a week the external organisation Pasada (Pastoral Activities and Services for people with
AIDS Dar es Salaam Archdiocese) comes to the mission to test for HIV, prescribe ARV’s and offer
counseling. The mission also has a mother and child care unit which concentrates on pre natal
care, baby weighing and childhood diseases and a permanent dental unit dealing with oral
hygiene and basic treatment such as removing and filling teeth. Twice weekly the mission holds
Health Education classes concentrating on nutrition and hygiene. There are 3 doctors and 15
nurses working at the mission.
Activities
Depending on your level of knowledge and professional qualifications, your duties will include;
diagnosing patients, dressing wounds, taking blood, checking vital signs, assisting in the
laboratory, prescribing and dispensing medication, assisting with pre and post natal care, baby
weighing and the treatment of children and infants.
There is also a dental surgery for oral hygiene and basic dental work and the possibility to assist
with the Health Education classes and HIV counseling.
Schedule
The mission is open from Monday to Friday from 8am to 3pm.
Resources
You will need to arrange your own insurance to be able to practice medically. You may want to
bring your own equipment such as a stethoscope although this is not essential.
Special Points
They can take a maximum of 3 medical professionals at one time.
It is useful to have a basic knowledge of Kiswahili in order to be able to communicate with the
patients.

Project Summary
Mico Hospital was opened in 2002 and is situated in Tegeta, a 20 minute walk from the Tegeta
volunteer house and a 40 minute walk from the Bahari volunteer house. It is a privately run
hospital with patients paying approximately 10,000 Tsh (UDS 5) for a consultation, tests,
diagnosis and treatment on an outpatient basis. The hospital handles between 30 and 60
patients per day, with the main areas of treatment being for Malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS
related illnesses and skin diseases. There are 5 doctors and 5 nurses working at the hospital.
Activities
Depending on your level of knowledge and professional qualifications, your duties will include;
taking patient history, checking vital signs, assisting in the laboratory, observation of surgery,
post surgery recovery, assisting with pre and post natal care and deliveries, treatment of children
and infants. There is also a dental surgery for oral hygiene and basic dental work.
Schedule
The hospital is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. You will be expected to work from Monday
to Friday from 8am – 2pm, you are more than welcome to work later if you wish and also at the
weekend.
Resources
You will need to arrange your own insurance to be able to practice medically. You will need to
bring your nursing/medical clothing, you may also want to bring your own equipment such as a
stethoscope although this is not essential.
Special Points

Counseling
Art in Tanzania Counseling Projects 30-9-2007
Project Summary
Art in Tanzania is conducting counseling work as part of the several projects. Time being we give
counseling as part of the Wamato Trust Project where the volunteers/interns attend the poor and
HIV infected families around the Wamato School and Clinic area. Thereon as part of the HIV
awareness project and also as part of the Women Group project we have lately established. We
are also targeting to start the counseling work at the hospitals and clinics we work at.
Activities
Depending on your level of knowledge and professional qualifications, your duties will include;
helping the poor, sick, widowed people to match the daily life and to help them to start to
develop their daily life to be self sustainable.In Tanzania where it is extremely hard for vast
majority of the society to earn their daily living, getting additional problems can be devastating.
Therefore the work also includes help to assist the people to develop means for to gain sufficient
income by teaching in English and other skills.
Sick people like HIV infected need courage to go for the tests as well as to start medication
(being free in Tanzania).

Resources
In counseling work one needs to be able to work independently and to be creative and
innovative. As there is practically no social welfare system available in Tanzania one needs to
work grass root basis.

We can take 4-6 volunteers/inters to support the counseling work at a time.
